Abstract
Najwa I remembers her mother and father, and recalls her early family life. She also explains the origin of her name. Najwa I shares memories from her childhood, including her interests and personality, and her early school life. She describes her Chicago neighborhood, particularly its ethnic diversity. She also recalls her early dance performances with Jimmy Payne. Najwa I recalls visits to her aunt in New York as a child. She then details her travels through Australia with Larry Steele's Smart Affair tour. She also recalls dance performances and instructors in the United States. Najwa I details her studies in African and Caribbean dance styles, and discusses the popularization of African dance techniques in the United States. She also recalls the founding of her dance troupe, the Najwa Dance Corps. Najwa I discusses the Najwa Dance Corps' philosophy, performances, and connection to Malcolm X College of Chicago. She reflects on her life and career, and considers what her legacy will be.
