Abstract
Rafael Cortada recalls his family origins in Latin America and the Caribbean. He remembers his parents and grandparents, and remembers his childhood in the Bronx, New York. He also recounts his early school years and his experiences at Fordham University in New York. Rafael Cortada recalls his stint in the military and his graduate education at Columbia. He then details his early teaching career, including the impact of Brown v. the Board of Education and the Black Studies movement on education. He also recounts his employment in the Foreign Service. Rafael discusses the impact of his book on black studies and of his tenure as president of several community colleges. He also shares his views on the state of historically black colleges, the rising cost of higher education, and the backlash against affirmative action. Cortada concludes by reflecting on the course of his career. Rafael Cortada reflects on his life and career, and discusses the impact of minorities in higher education. He also outlines the need for cooperation between African Americans and Hispanics, and expresses his hopes for the African American community.
