Abstract
Noted minister Johnie Flakes Jr., shares anecdotes from his childhood in Pumpkin Bottom-- a Phenix City, Alabama neighborhood. He describes the loss of his mother when he was just two years old and his father's struggle to raise his 4 children alone. Flakes also discusses his early years in the ministry and how he was initially called to preach. Noted minister and civil rights activist, Rev. Johnie Flakes describes life in segregated Columbus, Georgia and his efforts of fellow civil rights activists like Dr. Brewer, Primus King and others to bring about social change in the area. Flakes also discusses his role in the National Baptist Convention and some of the issues the organization has faced. Noted minister and civil rights activist, Rev. Johnie Flakes opines on the National Baptist Convention and the civil rights movement in Columbus, Georgia in the 1960s. He also shares thoughts on the nature of black religious expression and his role in the Baptist ministry.
