Abstract

Denver's first black mayor, Wellington Webb, discusses hisearly childhood in Chicago and Gary, Indiana. He also describes his parents, thier personalities and how asthma and divorce affected his childhood. Denver mayor, Wellington Webb details his young adulthood in Denver and his laissez-faire attitude towards his education. After an unexpected arrival of twins, Webb realized he had to buckle down. After attaining his bachelors and masters degrees, Webb was unable to find a suitable job. His grandmother pressed him to contact the mayor and tell him of his employment plight. The remainder of the story is on tape 3. Denver mayor Wellington Webb reveals his path to elected office which began in grassroots organizations during the turbulent 1960s. Rising through the ranks as a teacher, state representative then mayor, Webb credits his grandmother and wife for thier efforts on his behalf.
