Maria came to the United States from Mexico in 1971 with her husband, and the couple settled in Steelton. There was only one other Mexican family in the area at the time, so Maria attended a local 2nd grade class to learn English. After her husband passed away at an early age, Maria worked many jobs and eventually opened the first Hispanic grocery store in the area. Later, Maria opened the Mexican restaurant Herbie's in Steelton, which she named after her late husband. Today it is a favorite among authentic Mexican food enthusiasts. Maria is a founding member and vice president of the first Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Central Pennsylvania.
