Carol Herzog's family goes back four generations in Shipoke, making her its longest continuous resident. Herzog can recount the neighborhood's improvements over the years, some of them made necessary by the floods of 1972 and 1996. Many homes were remodeled after Agnes in 1972, but in 1996 the focus was restoration - a sign that the value of Harrisburg's history was becoming recognized. For Herzog, growing up on Pancake Row on Long Street meant playing games with the neighborhood kids in summer evenings and watching holiday fireworks over the river. On Sundays, her family would take the open air bus from Market Square to William's Grove amusement park.
