The need to complete a practicum for her Master's program at Penn State led Susan Silver Cohen to create Women in the Arts in the late 1970's. She has held positions with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. In addition, she has served on the boards of Pinnacle Health and the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. On her inspiration for Women in the Arts, "So, I thought, Central Pennsylvania, or Pennsylvania, is filled with women who are creative, and people pat them on their backs and they say 'oh, isn't that cute' but they don't do anything to display, to demonstrate their work to others..."
