The son of eastern European immigrants, Albert Morrison has fond memories of growing up in the diverse community of Steelton in the 1920s and 1930s - a tightknit community where everyone knew each other. Morrison's parents opened a shoe store and spoke four languages in order to communicate with their clientele. It was a time when Steelton schools were segregated only in grammar school, and the high school was a melting pot of all races and ethnicities. After studying music at Lebanon Valley College, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was assigned to radio/gunner school. While playing piano to entertain his peers, one day a colonel overheard and transferred him to the band, saving him from going overseas.
