Sloan Auchincloss's father worked in manufacturing and moved to Harrisburg in 1965 to be the president of Amp, Inc. That same year, Auchincloss obtained a master's in public relations, which he used in the Army during the Vietnam War. In 1969, he returned to Harrisburg, worked for Xerox and a local PR firm, and also met his wife, Susan. While waiting for their home on the West Shore to be renovated by local architect Duyrea Cameron, they moved into a home in the city. There they stayed to raise their children, at a time when many were fleeing the city. They created Auchincloss and Auchincloss, a PR firm, which they based in their home.
