The son of Swedish immigrants in Cleveland, Ohio, Richard Anliot's parents came to Harrisburg in the 1960s for a job with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. They commuted by bike from Shiremanstown every day to save money on gas. A highlight of Anliot's life in Harrisburg has been directing and acting in community theater, and he considers Harrisburg "a rich resource of the arts." Always an avid volunteer, Anliot's maxim is to "work with, not for" the community in order to help inspire pride. Now retired, he spends time tutoring Harrisburg third graders as part of America Reads. Through his love of photography, he has created slide shows for area hospitals and nonprofit agencies and currently teaches photography in local continuing education programs.
