Originally from Alabama, Ann Durr Lyon began her career in social work when she encountered segregation at college in the 1940s. Lyon and her husband moved to the Harrisburg area in 1957 - a time of segregation in public places. Lyon worked with the National Council of Jewish Women and the Human Relations Council to educate school and housing administrations about civil rights. Later, Lyon worked with the League of Women Voters to help change the city council structure to the current "Strong Mayor" system and began her career as an educator at HACC. She is currently involved in an oral history project documenting civil rights activists of the 1950s and '60s.
