Michael A. "Orville" Markowski used to fly kites in the woods near Lawnton Elementary School. By age eight, he was shoveling snow and delivering papers so he could buy model airplanes. Through middle school science fair projects, he became more enthused about aeronautics. Watching the jets and large prop planes coming into Middletown Air Field and The Space Race of the 1960s also fueled his interest. He built an air tunnel for his high school science fair and refined it annually until he won a full scholarship to Penn State University his senior year. Markowski initiated hang gliding on the East Coast and authored eight aviation books. Now an aerospace engineer, pilot and Experimental Aircraft Association Hall of Famer, is an Ultralight expert and publishes aviation books through his company, Aeronautical Publishers and Possibility Press.
