Interview Length: 55 minutes
Interview Date: March 25, 2009
Interview Location: Harrisburg, PA
For the past 50 years, Janet Brenner Brownold has been a driving force behind the arts and services volunteer community in Harrisburg. Raised uptown in the first half of the twentieth century as part of a large extended family, she appreciated the simple, tight knit community that Harrisburg offered. Her neighborhood was quietly diverse, with no discrimination between religious denominations. She was a volunteer nurse's aid during World War II and eventually became the president of the Family and Children Service. Later, Brownold held the distinction of becoming the first female president of the Board of Trustees at Harrisburg Academy as well as president of the Visiting Nurse Association. She continues to support the community through various volunteer efforts, those involved with the Susquehanna Art Museum in particular.
