Donald Alsedek's Syrian grandfather opened the White Palace restaurant on Verbeke Street when he arrived in the U.S., and Alsedek's father continued the tradition by opening Alsedek's Restaurant at 316 Broad St. Growing up in the mid-1940s, Alsedek bought food at the Broad Street Market for the family's restaurant and attended Woodward Elementary School with black students before integration. Walking alone in the city at age nine wasn't a problem - Alsedek would walk to the Penway Theatre to watch movies, which is perhaps where his love of theater began. Now he is the co-founder and executive artistic director of Open Stage at State Street of Harrisburg, which is now celebrating its 25th season.
