Nancy Mendes is a second generation American. Her grandparents immigrated to Massachusetts from the Cape Verde Islands in the early 1900s. Nancy grew up hearing Portuguese spoken by her parents, grandparents and relatives. Always an artist, Nancy drew on anything she could find, including walls and the family photos. She attended the University of Massachusetts, where she earned a B.A. degree in Art. Later, she studied art education at the University of Delaware, and received an MFA degree from Marywood University. An award-winning painter, Nancy designed the 2010 History Center exhibits. She works as a graphic designer at the PA Liquor Control Board, paints, does freelance design work, and is an adjunct professor at Penn State Harrisburg.
