The Baxter family came to Harrisburg in 1934 from Chester County, Penn. Bishop Nathan Baxter's father, Elder Belgium N. Baxter, was an acclaimed poet and wrote the Vicissitudes of Man, now part of the Harrisburg School District curriculum. Nathan Baxter was active as a child in Boy Scouts, the Police Athletic League and his father's church. He attended HACC and IBM Institute before being drafted in 1968, at which point he became a combat medic in Vietnam for two years. Baxter had a distinguished career in the Episcopal Church, including 12 years at the National Cathedral, before returning to Pennsylvania to ultimately become a bishop.
