Born in Harrisburg, Daniel H. Werner remembers when people sat out on their front porches in the evening, a habit that created a sense of community. He specifically recalls when the Ringling Brothers Circus came to town and remembers listening to the Green Hornet and The Shadow on the radio. After graduation from Susquehanna Township High School in 1953, he had a short vocal music career in New York City and was one of few white baseball players in the Eastern Negro League. Werner worked his way up to detective in the Harrisburg Police force. As a policeman during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, Werner notes it as a time of confusion and turmoil in Harrisburg.
