The published work is primarily a result of collaboration between The HistoryMakers and the IDVL research team. See The HistoryMakers and Informedia Collaboration for a description of the early work that led to the HistoryMakers Digital Archive and the IDVL web site. See also the broader Informedia research group pages. The goal of recent NSF funding, NSF Grant No. IIS-0705491, is to share Informedia processing capabilities and interfaces especially suitable for video oral history collections as open source, for the benefit of other video collection holders and users. The work was presented at the annual Oral History Association (OHA) meeting in 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012. At the OHA 2012 meeting in Cleveland on Oct. 11, Mike Christel presented his and Bryan Maher's work on IDVL processing for oral histories, "Technologies Improving Access to Oral Histories: Fully Searchable Stories Presented in a Multimedia Web Portal", 6.1 MB PDF slide set of talk, 0.4 MB PDF paper detailing the talk. Christel presented this work at OHA 2011 in Denver on October 13: 1.9 MB PDF slide set of screen shot walkthroughs accompanying talk, 1.6 MB PDF slide set for talk. At the OHA 2010 Meeting, Kathryn Stine presented "A Multi-Tiered Approach to Describing Video Oral Histories at The HistoryMakers" 8.0 MB PPT slide set, and Mike Christel presented "Facilitating Access to Video Oral Histories through Informedia Technologies and a Multimedia Web Portal" 1.6 MB PowerPoint slide set. On the CMU path to this goal of openly sharing systems, software, and interfaces into digital video libraries, we have beta-tested features with The HistoryMakers as well as other oral history collections.
